🎤 Looking Back After 50 Years: The Day Donny Osmond Thought His Career Was Over at 18

Exactly 50 years ago, when The Donny & Marie Show officially debuted, Donny Osmond stepped into the spotlight under bright studio lights — but inside, he was carrying a very different feeling. Having just turned 18, Donny believed his solo recording career might already be coming to an end.

In an exclusive conversation with PEOPLE, the “Soldier of Love” singer recalled that moment with striking honesty and reflection.

“I remember exactly what I thought,” Donny said. “I told myself, ‘There goes my recording career.’

At the time, Donny Osmond was already a familiar face to audiences worldwide, having grown up in the glare of teen-idol fame. Co-hosting a television show with his sister Marie was both a major opportunity — and a double-edged sword. Donny worried that the wholesome, family-friendly image of the show would box him in, making it difficult for the public to see him as a serious, mature recording artist.

History, however, would prove him wrong.

Rather than signaling an ending, The Donny & Marie Show became a turning point — laying the foundation for a long, resilient, and constantly evolving career in entertainment. From music and television to Broadway and live performance, Donny Osmond repeatedly pushed past the very limitations he once feared.

Fifty years later, looking back at what felt like a closing chapter, Donny now understands it was actually… the beginning of something entirely new.
