Introduction
In the late 1960s, Mary Wilson—founding member of The Supremes—and Welsh singer Tom Jones shared a passionate yet complicated love affair. Their romance began after they met while performing in Munich. Wilson later recalled being instantly captivated by Jones, describing how he wore “a frilly shirt, black tuxedo, and of course—tight pants,” and how their connection felt like “a spark catching fire” .
At first, Mary did not know that Tom was married. Upon finding out, she admitted feeling betrayed, though she could not easily walk away: “I was in love, and so was he, but he had a wife… I knew eventually the relationship had to end” . Despite their busy schedules, the two continued seeing each other, but ultimately Jones chose to end the affair and return to his family.
Wilson later confessed that Tom Jones had “broken my heart”, yet affirmed they eventually became friends. Tom even revealed that Mary grew close to his family, with his wife Linda warmly welcoming her.
In her memoir Dreamgirl & Supreme Faith, Wilson spoke candidly, saying: “I truly loved him, and I can’t deny that, because it’s the truth”. Their relationship, though brief, left a lasting emotional mark on both artists—an intimate chapter in Mary Wilson’s life filled with both love and heartbreak.
