“Ring of Fire” is one of the most iconic songs in country music history, forever associated with Johnny Cash’s legendary version. The song was written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore in the early 1960s. June Carter drew inspiration from the overwhelming emotions she felt as she fell in love with Johnny Cash, even though both were married to other people at the time.

The first recording, titled “(Love’s) Ring of Fire,” was released in 1962 by Anita Carter, June’s younger sister.. When Anita’s version failed to gain much traction, Johnny Cash re-recorded it in March 1963. Cash’s rendition was strikingly original, incorporating mariachi-style trumpets inspired by a dream he had, with arrangements by Bill McElhiney and Karl Garvin.

Cash’s recording became a massive hit, spending seven weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and crossing over to reach the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over time, “Ring of Fire” has become one of Johnny Cash’s most enduring and celebrated songs.

Decades later, on June 1, 2018, Tom Jones brought new life to this classic with a live performance at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, joined by the Welsh duo Into The Ark. His powerful voice, blended with the fresh harmonies and musicianship of Into The Ark, gave audiences a unique and unforgettable take on the timeless hit.. This rendition showcased not only the enduring universality of “Ring of Fire,” but also Tom Jones’ remarkable ability to bridge genres—from gospel and R&B to rock and country—while honoring one of the greatest songs in American music history.
