George Strait and the Father-Son Bond Behind the Spotlight
George Strait – hailed as the “King of Country Music” – is not only a musical legend with over 120 million records sold worldwide, but also a devoted father in his private life. Despite a dazzling career filled with hit songs and prestigious awards, Strait has faced significant personal trials, most notably the loss of his daughter and the journey he shares with his only son, George Harvey Strait Jr., affectionately known as Bubba.
In 1986, tragedy struck when Strait’s 13-year-old daughter, Jennifer, died in a car accident. Deeply affected, George became more private and turned his focus to family and music. Bubba, born in 1981, was raised closely by his parents and soon developed a deep love for rodeo, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.
Bubba didn’t just carry on the family tradition in rodeo—he also joined his father in music. As a child, he lent his voice to Pure Country (1992), and later co-wrote many songs for George’s albums, including Twang, Here for a Good Time, Love Is Everything, and Honky Tonk Time Machine. George once admitted, “Bubba really got me back into writing.”
Though Bubba prefers to stay out of the public eye, he enjoys a happy family life with his wife, Tamara Strait, and their two children.
