“How Great Thou Art” is a revered Christian hymn that has resonated with believers worldwide for over a century. Its origins trace back to 1885 when Swedish pastor Carl Gustav Boberg penned a poem titled “O Store Gud” (“O Great God”) after experiencing a sudden storm followed by a serene calm, inspiring him to reflect on the majesty of God’s creation.

The poem was initially matched to a Swedish folk melody and gained popularity in Sweden. It underwent several translations: into German by Manfred von Glehn in 1907, into Russian by Ivan Prokhanoff five years later, and eventually into English by British missionary Stuart K. Hine in the early 1920s. Hine expanded the hymn, adding original verses inspired by his experiences, and his English rendition is the version widely sung today.

Country music artist Alan Jackson included “How Great Thou Art” in his 2006 album “Precious Memories,” a collection of gospel hymns. His heartfelt live performance of the song at the Ryman Auditorium showcases his deep-rooted faith and has been lauded for its sincerity and emotional resonance. Jackson’s rendition contributes to the hymn’s enduring legacy, bridging traditional gospel themes with contemporary country music.

The hymn’s enduring appeal lies in its profound lyrics and stirring melody, which continue to inspire awe and reverence, inviting listeners to reflect on the greatness of God and the wonders of His creation.
