Released on November 24, 2003, “American Soldier” was the second single from Toby Keith’s eighth studio album, Shock’n Y’all (2003). Co-written by Keith and Chuck Cannon, and produced in collaboration with James Stroud, the song served as a stirring tribute to men and women in uniform, honoring their sacrifices and steadfast dedication.

Keith was deeply inspired to write “American Soldier” after numerous USO tours and encounters with military personnel and their families. As he put it, he wrote it “for all the times that I get to meet the troops on these USO tours… this is my support for the American fighting men and women”. The song contrasts the public’s perception of soldiers with the emotional reality of their service—highlighting their humanity beneath the uniform.

Upon release, “American Soldier” resonated strongly with audiences. It soared to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, where it remained for four weeks, and also crossed over to reach the Top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s commercial impact was long-lasting, earning Platinum certification from the RIAA and surpassing one million digital downloads by 2017. Additionally, it marked Toby Keith’s 13th No. 1 single overall.
