Introduction
George Strait – The Journey from a Van to “Entertainer of the Year”
In a warm and humorous interview with the McCain Brothers, George Strait — freshly crowned “Entertainer of the Year” — shared heartfelt stories about the long road he traveled to reach his current success. It’s a journey that began with him driving a van and hauling music equipment in a trailer, and eventually led to owning a tour bus — a symbol of success in the touring music world.
George recalled the early days performing in Oceanside, near Norman, Oklahoma, when he was still behind the wheel of his own van. “When I got that van, it was like a dream come true,” he said. As things started to take off — more radio play, more shows — he upgraded to a motorhome and, later on, finally got a tour bus.
The prestigious CMA Award is far more than just a decoration. For George, it represents true recognition. “It means you’ve earned some respect from the people in the country music business,” he explained. “They had a lot of people to choose from, and they chose me.”
George also gave heartfelt credit to his band, Ace in the Hole, especially David Anthony, a close friend from Oklahoma City. He emphasized how the band had become like family, traveling and living together on the road. “Sure, we have our differences sometimes, but they’re always musical and we work them out,” he said. “I truly believe they are the best country band on the road today.”
Closing the interview with his signature humility and passion, George Strait showed why he’s not only a country music icon, but also a true embodiment of dedication, perseverance, and heart.
